We know that teen acne is more than just a skin condition—it’s a challenge that affects confidence and mental well-being. That’s why I offer specialized facial treatments designed to combat teen acne effectively. Helping your teen combat acne and gain confidence from within!
Understanding Teen Acne
Acne is a common skin condition during adolescence. It is triggered by hormonal changes that increase oil production. This can lead to clogged pores and outbreaks of pimples, especially in teens. I always aim to address these challenges with a holistic approach to skin health.
Mental Health Effects:
● Low self esteem
● Low self acceptance
● Depression
● Social withdrawal
● Negative impact on school & work
Causes & Triggers:
● Hormonal changes
● Genetics
● Stress
● Diet & sensitivities
● Excess oil production
● Clogged pores
● Bacteria
Good to Know
Acne, whether it’s a mild case or severe, does not mean your skin is dirty, although keeping it clean is imperative. In saying that, it is important to know that over-cleansing and using harsh ingredients such as, AHA’s, retinols & benzoyl peroxide, could be contributing to the condition.
Contrary to popular belief, even though there is an overproduction of oil (sebum), the skin needs to stay hydrated. The more dehydrated it is, the more oil production. The skin barrier of our young adults is different from adult skin and should be treated with care, using the right products with ingredients that will not harm this precious skin (aka retinol*). Retail stores and online stores are loaded with products to try and it can be very confusing. Let’s keep it simple….
Keeping Teen Skincare Simple
● Cleanse in the morning & before bed. Use an oil-free gentle cleanser (for sensitive skin). Look for active ingredients, such as salicylic acid, & niacinamide B3.
● Spot treat if required. Using a Q-tip, apply Benzoyl peroxide (very drying), colloidal sulfur, or tea tree oil. (For OTC products I recommend Neostrata Acne Clarifying Solution or Avene Clearance.)
● Moisturize after cleansing using a light weight based moisturizer. Look for ingredients such as HA (Hyaluronic Acid, glycerin, & squalene)
● DON’T FORGET: SPF in the morning~
For Best Results:
● Avoid sugar as much as possible! Include fruits and veggies which are full of antioxidants in your daily diet.
● Consider avoiding dairy products (see guidance from a nutritionist first).
● Try, try, try to drink plenty of good, clean water (limit pop and energy drinks).
● EFA’S (essential fatty acids) , particularly linoleic acid, would be helpful. Studies show that those with acne tend to be low on these good fats.
● Zinc….an essential mineral responsible for cellular metabolism.
● Manage stress. Get plenty of exercise, join extra curricular activities and get plenty of rest (usually not a problem:)). Have fun and know your skin will get better!
● DO NOT POP YOUR ZITS! If you can’t help yourself, use clean hands, pop from bottom up, not from the sides as we don’t want it to spread. Again, if you must, only pop those that will extract easily and clean IMMEDIATELY! Over popping, popping incorrectly or lesions which are not ready to be popped could result in spread of infection, and possibly acne scarring.
● Try not to touch your face as much as possible.
● Wipe your cell phones clean, simply by using alcohol wipes.
● Make sure your pillow case and face towels are clean.
● Whether you’re female or male, it’s great to see an esthetician, as they have specific products & tools for a deep cleansing facial.
*Retinol & Retinoids – coles notes
Retinol is all over the internet and store shelves – as well it should be. It’s an amazing ingredient….for the right skin.
What is it exactly? Retinoids are a class of compounds derived from Vitamin A. Retinols are derived from retinoids and are not as potent. Both boost cell turnover & exfoliation, are amazing for acne prone and aging skin. However….retinoids are much stronger and can be found in products issued by your doctor or dermatologist.
Retinols, which are lower in strength, can be purchased OTC (over the counter). As I mentioned previously, teen & young adult skin is not equal to adult skin and research suggests they should be avoided in order to not strip their young, sensitive skin barrier. There are other retinol equivalents derived from nature that produce similar effects.
Look for Bakuchiol, Azelaic Acid, Niacinamide B3, Carrot seed oil (must be mixed with other products), Seabuckthorne oil and Rambutan.
